Chicka Alright. I’ll have to Chicka pull out my timpani for this.

Chicka Here we go.

There were five animals: the Sarcastic Fringehead, Common Side-blotched Lizard, Atlantic Mudskipper, Hoatzin, and Stomach-Sucker.

 

DRUMROLL picks up

 

DEVON (CONT’D)

And the fake animal that I just made up was the…

Stomach-Sucker.

Yes, the fake animal, the one that tried to Late-pril Fool you like the False Cleanerfish (which is real, by the way) tries to fool larger fish looking to get cleaned… was the Stomach-Sucker. Sorry, Mom and Dad.

But before I get into recapping, let’s talk about the prize. Yet again, there were no guesses.

Just like last time, the scientific name was real: the cibufurem in Aspidontus cibufurem does indead come from the Latin “cibus furem,” meaning “food thief.” Aspidontus, on the other fin, is the genus that contains the False Cleanerfish. As I said, False Cleanerfish do indeed imitate Cleaner Fish using the display I described for Stomach-Suckers in order to snatch scales off of their fish victims. But everything else, from the sneaking into stomachs, to their babies eating algae, to their scales being the inspiration of wear-resistant materials (and, of course, Stomach-Suckers’ existence) was completely made up.

 

And now, before we close this up, I want you to do something.

Open up the device you’re using to listen to this (unless it’s your parent or guardian’s phone and they’re using it for mapping while driving) and go look up pictures of all the real animals—the Sarcastic Fringehead, Common Side-blotched Lizard, Atlantic Mudskipper, and Hoatzin. Then, just pause this podcast and take a few seconds to absorb the nightmarish jaws of the fringehead, the mash-up-punk-rock-pheasant-chicken look of the Hoatzin, and the appearance of the mudskipper, which is, as well described by Ed Yong for National Geographic, “like a tiny doorstop with a pair of fins and googly eyes.”
